TV health hazards?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I've just read the yahoo news article on health hazards TV can cause. If you havn't read it here's part of it:

:: Early childhood television viewing may be a trigger for autism.
:: Permanent eyesight damage has been strongly linked to TV watching.
:: Viewing TV may be a bigger factor in causing obesity than diet or exercise.
:: The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease increases with each extra daily hour of television viewing among people aged 20 to 60.
:: TV viewing is associated with irregular sleeping patterns among infants and toddlers.
:: Watching television significantly increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

After reading this I was shocked. Surely not all of this can be true. Watching too much TV can cause irregular sleeping patterns, can cause eye cancer and can also, through lack of excercise, lead to obesity but I don't see how it can also trigger autism, increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and type 2 diabetes.

Any answers?

My wife is looking for 30 carb breakfast ideas for a type 1 diabetes diet. Can anyone give me some help?

She is not big on cooking in the morning. She is a teacher as well so she needs something portable if at all possible.

Does Anyone Know What These Medications Are?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

My dad recently died from complications of diabetes. I found these things among his medical supplies. Does anybody know what they are for and if I can make any use of them, they are all creams or gels:

Fluocinonide
SilvaSorb
Proshield Plus
Iodosorb

He had a lot of foot and leg problems, I think they may have been for that.

How does weight loss affect menstrual cycle?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

….it's long, but there's some backstory….then my question :)

I'm a 27 year old female, a month ago I weighed 244lbs. Today I weighed in at 227lbs.

A few years ago a gyno suggested I had PCOS based off of some of the signs I showed (She didn't do an exam at the time) such as excessive facial hair, dark hair on my belly, irregular/missed periods, hair loss…etc. They checked my thyroid, it was okay.

I had a period about all summer last summer, it stopped in Nov'ish and I had not had one until the first week in February…….when I changed my diet.

On Feb 2, I started the South Beach Diet…I decided to do this due to the readying I'd done on PCOS and its link to insulin resistance. I KNOW I should go to a doctor, lack of insurance for one has been a reason why I haven't…..and I also wanted to see if diet/exercise could help me.

On day three of no carb/no sugar of phase 1, I started bleeding. And have not stopped. After the loss of the initial water weight I've lost about 5 more pounds within three weeks.

…….I'm just wondering about the link between the weight loss/change in diet and the constant bleeding. Is this on its way to normalizing? Will the continual weight loss eventually lead to a normal cycle and the disappearance of other PCOS symptoms? How much weight will I need to lose? Anyone with a similar situation have any input?

The South Beach Diet is close to a diabetes diet…..I eat NO simple carbs, only complex carbs in wheats, fruits, and veggies….high fiber, moderate/high protein,

Alternative to Glucose screening?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Does anybody know if there is an alternative to drinking the glucose for the 1 hour challenge test? I am very sensitive and do not react well to sugar and caffeine– I get stomach pains and heart palpitations. Is there a food or drink equivalent to getting the 50 grams of glucose that the doctors might suggest if you have a hard time with the drink? I've heard OJ or jelly beans, but I don't know if it will yield the same results. Why can't you just monitor your glucose levels with a diabetes monitor/test strips after eating a high-carb meal to see if it is high? Why is it necessary to have that drink?
